A VPLS Network is an Ethernet based point to point communication over IP/MPLS networks. One difference between MPLS ans VPLS is that MPLS is layer 3 and VPLS is layer 2. MPLS controls the routing and class of service (CoS) in the carrier network via IP address. VPLS does it on the equipment side via MAC address more like a LAN. VPLS seems to add a greater possibility of security and also allows for the customer to control CoS out of their own equipment, whereas MPLS is easier on the customer’s IT department.
VPLS service provides better security and is more flexible than a traditional MPLS connection.
